Vancouver House’s lobby is not some neutral and forgettable pass-through space, but rather is conceived as a boldly-lit and inspiring contemporary art gallery. Here, eyes will be astonished by the everyday transformed into the exceptional. For example, mailboxes have been ganged into an X-shaped sculpture in black metal, a talking point rather than slots set anonymously along the walls of a back room.
The reception desk, the monumental staircase upstairs to the resident’s lounge, the artwork on the wall, even the terrazzo patterning of the floor have all been conceived to enrich the daily life of residents. BIG’s interior design team led by Francesca Portesine has chosen a palette of materials and textures that link the lobby with the design themes of the entire building. This micro meets macro attention is gesamtkunstwerk thinking in action.
